Sumptuous Pizza! Expedition to space!!

Pizza, a subtle delicacy is relished by everyone. Consumption of pizza has given us immense pleasure and has taken us to another world. Have you ever heard about the spectacular voyage of pizza to space? This remarkable event has really taken pizza to greater heights. Pizza-hut, an inveterate fast-food chain has created a tremendous impact by doing something out of the world. 

Their delivery of pizzas to those residing at the International Space Station (ISS) is indeed mind-boggling.

This historic event occurred in 2001 when a Russian rocket blasted off to outer space just to deliver a classic chicken pepperoni pizza. This pizza made a remarkable journey from the factory outlet to the docking stations at the ISS through the Russian rocket which was accustomed to resupply vitals to the ISS. This pizza was dispatched to the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Usachov who is a die-hard fan of pizza and was desperate for pizza after a voyage and a sojourn to the ISS.

It was a personal pan pizza 6 inches in diameter, the smallest of all sizes offered by the company since it was the only class of pizza that could fit into the oven at space.

Special accompaniments were made to the pizza like raising the salt and spices level since a long stopover at the ISS desensitized his taste bud and he needed something to rejuvenate them. They also substituted pepperoni with salami since the shelf-life of pepperoni (1 week) was trivial when compared to the shelf-life of other processed meats (2-5 years). Shelf-life is a paramount criterion considered to those foods taken to space. 

Pizza hut claims that this promotional stunt was the first of its kind and they had made a lavish expenditure which was estimated to 1 million dollars. This lump-sum payment was made to the Russian space agency.

The Russian rocket also appended the logo of this fast-food chain. The cosmonaut in turn vlogged his testimonial on the pizza where he took the piping hot pizza out from the oven; cherished those slices which glided on the space and bestowed a thumbs-up gesture at the end signifying his contentment.

This remarkable incident which was an ad campaign had become a trendsetting record. This event was a milestone and even though subsequent incidents were accomplished by many others, this incident pulled off pizza delivery to space and brought this out-of-the-box idea into existence.
